A massive alloy-steel shaft on a heavy-duty lathe

01 · The challenge

Calder’s wind gearbox shafts were wearing bearings early. Measurements showed the bearing seats were out of round by more than the drawing allowed.

02 · Our approach

We turned the shafts on our heavy lathe, then ground the bearing seats in a temperature-controlled bay and measured roundness on every shaft.

03 · The result

Field data after two years shows bearing life up 12%. Calder now buys all its replacement shafts from us.
